Hormone Therapy
for Women

Replenish the energy and feeling of your prime throughout every season of life.

Your hormone levels influence nearly every aspect of your life

Women can experience many different phases throughout the course of their life: pregnancy, post-partum recovery, peri-menopause, and menopause (just to name a few). Each of these phases is unique for each woman, and each impacts her hormone levels. We used to accept these changes in energy, mood swings, and declines in strength and sexuality as something we couldn't control. Now we know that rebalancing hormone levels can help restore that sense of your best self.

BHRT

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) works to balance estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and supportive hormones, addressing the monthly fluctuations and life stage transitions that shape women's health.

Testosterone

Testosterone is often misunderstood as exclusively masculine, but it is actually the most prevalent hormone in the human body for both men and women. It plays essential roles in women's energy, metabolic function, muscle maintenance, and sexual vitality.

Expert Medical Guidance

Women's hormonal needs evolve through pregnancy, post-partum recovery, peri-menopause, and menopause, requiring different therapeutic approaches for each phase, managed under the care of a medical expert.

How does hormone therapy for women work?

Hormones fluctuate throughout the month and across life stages

Women's hormonal patterns differ fundamentally from the gradual decline men experience, involving monthly cycles and distinct transitions through the different seasons of a woman's natural life. Understanding these patterns is essential to developing a BHRT strategy that responds appropriately to a woman's evolving physiological needs

Bioidentical hormone therapy can replace what is naturally lost

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy uses estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and supportive hormones that are identical in molecular structure to those your body produces naturally.

Side effects are always possible and should be monitored closely

Hormone replacement therapy for women is complex, and requires time to best understand appropriate timing, dosing, and administration. understand and properly administer. Even with proper medical oversight unintended side effects may occur, which is why having a trusted relationship with a physician who is readily available is critical.

Safety

Hormone replacement therapy for women has evolved significantly with better understanding of appropriate timing, dosing, and formulations. However, improper protocols can still produce counterproductive effects which are largely avoidable through proper medical oversight, bioidentical formulations, and treatment initiated within the optimal window for each life stage.
Dedicated team

Balance

Hormone therapy for women operates as a carefully calibrated system where estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone interact with thyroid function, cortisol patterns, and monthly cycles. Achieving therapeutic benefit requires understanding how these interconnected systems respond to treatment adjustments throughout the month and across life transitions.
Philosophy & Approach

Continuity of Care

Hormone needs evolve continuously as women move through perimenopause into menopause and beyond, with requirements shifting significantly across these transitions. Our team interprets these trends through regular blood work and clinical assessment, ensuring your protocol remains effective rather than becoming misaligned with your body's changing requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Why was there a black box warning about female hormone therapy?

A “black box warning” was added to hormone therapy for women in 2003 due to findings from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study that indicated an increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and stroke. However, subsequent research and analysis have shown that the original study’s findings were misapplied, as they primarily involved older women and hormone formulations not currently in common use. More recent data indicates female hormone therapy can be safe and beneficial, especially when initiated within 10 years of menopause onset.

The FDA removed the black box warning in the fall of 2025.

Will I need to stay on hormone therapy indefinitely?

Hormone therapy duration depends on your life stage, health goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some women use therapy to navigate the peri-menopausal transition and discontinue once symptoms stabilize, while others continue long-term to maintain the metabolic, cognitive, and physical benefits that hormone optimization can provide.

Post-menopausal women who stop therapy usually return to their baseline hormone levels, which may reintroduce symptoms that had resolved during treatment

Can hormone replacement therapy reduce my body's ability to create these hormones naturally?

Hormone replacement therapy does reduce your body’s natural production while you’re actively treating, particularly during reproductive years when your ovaries are still functioning. However, during peri-menopause and menopause, natural production has usually already begun to decline. Your Align Wellness BHRT clinician considers your natural hormone levels and life stage when determining the best treatment protocol for you.

Will hormone therapy affect my weight or body composition?

Properly balanced hormone therapy typically supports healthy weight management by optimizing metabolic function, preserving muscle mass, and reducing the tendency toward abdominal fat accumulation that often accompanies hormonal decline. That is why our BHRT programs often accompany our weight management program. As integrative medical practitioners, your Align Wellness physician monitors these metabolic markers throughout treatment to help ensure hormone therapy supports your body composition goals.
